Stuck In the Middle

“Mother!” Kahlan cried out  as the figure in the distance became clear. It had been years since she had seen her face, but Kahlan could never forget it. Kahlan ran to embrace the woman she had lost at to young an age. Nothing else mattered at this moment.

“I am so glad to see you! I have so many things to tell you, I don’t even know where to begin!” Kahlan spilled out, so many things going through her mind. She couldn’t wait to tell her about Dennee and her baby. The baby Richard saved. Richard. Where was he?

“Kahlan, dear, I am so excited to see you! I have been waiting for this day to come, just not this soon.” Her mother spoke, sighing at the last part. Kahlan tried to read her mother’s face, but it was impossible to read a Confessor’s face.

“What are you talking about? Where are we? Where’s Richard?” Kahlan started to panic, and suddenly everything washed over her. Her confessing the man in the village infected by the fever, and in turn getting infected. She had done it to save Zedd’s life, but now she was resenting her selfless behavior. The helpless feeling was now flooding back to her.

“Am I dead?” Kahlan choked out, tears starting to run down her face. The overwhelming excitement she had felt only mere minutes earlier disappeared in a flash. How could this have happened? This isn’t how she had wanted to go. Not yet.

She looked at her mother, standing in the light. Kahlan couldn’t see anything but her mother and the blinding brightness surrounding them.

“Kahlan, dear, you are in between the spirit world and the land of the living. Just beyond is the Underworld,” she pointed to a green light, barely visible, that Kahlan hadn’t noticed until then, “where everyone is waiting for you,” she spoke softly and kindly, her words almost captivating Kahlan and bringing her in.

Kahlan almost collapsed at that moment. She quickly stopped her trembling and started running in the opposite direction, away from whatever fate lie ahead for her.

In seconds she found herself precisely in the same spot, directly in front of her mother. She realized there was no way out.

Kahlan took a deep breath. This was not the time to panic. She couldn’t give up yet. She was leaving too much behind her. As Kahlan stood, trying to think of a way to at least get a sign out to Richard, she felt someone touch her. She had forgotten her mother was there.

“So, you are the new Mother Confessor. I always knew something was special about you. And, you have gone into the Con Dar,” Kahlan’s mother exclaimed, “I am so proud of you, my child. But, it’s time to leave that all behind. Soon, you will have a new life, and forget about all your troubles. How you could never be with Richard. Your eyes show how broken that makes you. I am sorry that I put this unimaginable curse upon you. I am so very sorry for so many things.” Her mother spoke, this time taking Kahlan’s hand and starting to guide her to the light.

Relief and anger and sadness washed over Kahlan. Her mother had spoken the truth, but in a twisting way. Something didn’t feel right, and if there was anything she had learned from the Seeker, it was to go with her gut feeling.

“Mother, before we enter the Underworld, I have only one question.” She swallowed hard, trying to think of what Richard would say. She looked at the woman, into her deep blue eyes. It looked exactly like her mother, in every detail. She even had the tiny birth mark on her upper left cheekbone, in a shape of a star. “How is my father, Michael?” Kahlan asked.

“Michael, he is doing well. It seems he has forgiven me for confessing him. Strange things have happened in your absence,” the woman said, looking around, avoiding Kahlan’s eyes.

“Now, come with me. We shall finally be together once again. Forever, my child. Doesn’t that sound lovely?” She tried to reach for Kahlan’s hand, but Kahlan stepped back. “What in the spirits name are you doing, Kahlan?” She asked, walking toward her.

“My father was a wretched man, who would never change, even after death.” Kahlan stared at the woman’s face. “And his name is Mitchell. I demand to know who you are and why you are impersonating my mother!” Kahlan commanded, hurt by what felt like her mother’s betrayal.

“Kahlan, I don’t know what you are talking about. I am your mother. Don’t you see what’s happening? The Seeker has tricked you.” The stranger tried to explain, but Kahlan wouldn’t have it. She couldn’t stand to hear more lies.

“You, you stay away from me! Whatever you are!” Kahlan screamed, starting to turn around and begin running again. She heard her mother’s voice start to cackle.

“Where are you going to run to, Kahlan? One way or another I am going to take you to the  Underworld. The Seeker will be without his Confessor, and he will be mourning his love.” The voice became louder and clearer the further Kahlan ran. All of a sudden, she found herself running into the impersonator.

“And in that moment of weakness, I will strike him down. It’s just a pity I have to take you out of the equation. I would have rather enjoyed keeping such an impressive woman around,” the voice said disappointedly. Kahlan watched as her mother’s eyes looked up and down her body.

“You bastard!” Kahlan roared, hurdling herself at the man hidden behind her mother’s physique. Before she could reach him though, he disappeared. Kahlan ended up falling through the thin air and landing hard on the ground.

A hand reached down and grabbed  her hair. Kahlan started squirming and kicking, but he had a firm grip on her.

“You should have just taken this comforting hand and not second guessed me. Your real mother can be found only 20 paces away. But, you are a stubborn Confessor. And, Richard Cypher has only filled your head with lies and made trusting people even more difficult for you,” Rahl exclaimed through her mother, and started to yank on her hair and drag Kahlan across the floor. “I never wanted to hurt you Kahlan. But you have left me with no alternative. I am so very sorry.” At those words, he started pulling harder and quickened his pace.

“Please,” Kahlan was begging, tears falling down her face. He stopped just a foot away from the looming shadows. The wall clearly was right in front of them because everything starting to turn a dark green shade from the shadows. If she was going to have any chance for last words, this was it. Rahl waited, patiently.

“I have only one thing to say to you. When I cross over, know this; I will haunt you night and day until Richard plunges the Sword of Truth into your cold, black heart. That will be the happiest moment in my life,” Kahlan hissed, starting to get excited as she pictured how the event might fore-play. She started up again.

“I will cherish your face at the realization that you could never avert the prophecy. I will laugh as I watch your body slowly fade away, all hope lost. The blood oozing out of your chest will bring me pleasure you can never imagine. When you breathe your last breath, and I am staring at the lifeless body of the most hideous creature to ever walk any of the three territories, I will remember that image forever. Then we will see whose fate was more unimaginable,” Kahlan gasped for breath as she looked at the face of evil, and couldn’t help the slight smirk on her face. “My death will only make Richard stronger.”

Rahl laughed. Kahlan flinched hearing the beast’s laughter coming out of her mother. He raised his arm, and Kahlan looked away, not wanting to face what was coming to her. Instead of getting slapped in the face, she felt her mother’s hand caressing her cheek.

“It’s a shame. You would have made a great queen by my side,” Rahl spoke as he started walking to her end.

Kahlan kept her eyes behind her, not wanting to watch as she entered the other side. The only thing she could think of was of him. “I love you, Richard.” And before she knew it, it was all over with.

She opened her eyes. Everything was hazy, but she could make out Richard’s face. She wanted to call out to him, but she couldn’t find the strength within herself. Without a glance backward, he was gone, and Kahlan was alone again.

**********************************************************************************************************************************

Kahlan was still feeling very weak and vulnerable, but she needed to see Richard. To know that this was no illusion. They embraced each other, and Kahlan never wanted him to let go.

“I thought I was going to lose you” Richard whispered in her ear. She smiled and ran her hand over his arm, just wanting to be near him. He had no idea how close he had actually come to losing her. Kahlan, not wanting him to read any expressions on her face, changed the subject.

“Did you get the boxes?” She asked, at the moment only somewhat wanting to hear the answer. Thankfully, he took the bait.

A huge grin came across his face. “Yes.”

“Then it is almost over,” Kahlan said, the warmth and reality of their situation helping her to forget what she had just been through.

“There’s one more thing,” Richard added, his face becoming more serious.

Kahlan found the power in herself to lift her body up, closer to Richard. “What is it, Richard?” She asked, curious to what he was referring to.

“You have to confess me,” he spit out. At that moment, everything that had happened earlier that day, everything that had happened when she was a child, even the torture brought on by Giller could not have matched what she was feeling. No. There had to be another way. Her worst nightmare was coming true. Shota’s vision, everything Kahlan had feared since she had fallen for Richard was now tormenting her. She now wished more than anything to be back with Rahl. She would give anything to have let him drag her to the Underworld. That would have been merciful to what she was now going to have to face with Richard.

First entry here. I have no friends, as of now, on livejournal, so I guess I am basically writing to myself.  I am almost finished with reading Twilight, and I can not wait till the movie comes out. I've been sick for the last few days, so I've missed a lab in biology and listening to lectures in world history. My drumline is most likely going to kill me tomorrow, so this just might be my last post. I have to still figure out how to do fanart, please don't laugh. I have a load of homework that I need to make-up. All that fun stuff. I have been able to watch all the decent scary movies on fearondemand. Damn, I guess I have a pretty dull life. Hope the writer's strike ends soon, I miss new episodes. Janet
